Don't forget that individuals are now REQUIRED to have medical insurance, or face a tax penalty!  That penalty can be significant and will continue to go up for the next several years.  For 2016, the penalty is the higher of these two amounts:

  • 2.5% of your household income
  • $695 per person ($347.50 per child under 18)

Open enrollment for individual policies begins in November each year and effective dates of coverage begin on January 1st.  If you don't enroll for a plan during open enrollment, you will not be able to enroll for coverage later in the year unless you have a qualifying event, such as losing other coverage.  If you have a qualifying event, you must enroll in a new plan within 60 days of first losing coverage or you must wait until the next open enrollment.
